MacKerricher State Park and the Mendocino Area Parks Association is offering a free, three-hour training course for those interested in joining the parks gray whale volunteer docent program. The training will introduce participants to the natural history of gray whales, including their amazing 6,000 mile annual migration, learn about the whale skeletons on display at the park, and how to teach park visitors about gray whales and other marine mammals. The training is scheduled for Saturday, December 9, 2017 from 10 am to 1 pm. Meet at the MacKerricher Park office. Please call 707.961.0471 to reserve a spot for the training session. Volunteers who complete the three-hour training course will be paired with experienced docents. New volunteer docents will be invited to go along on docent led gray whale programs that will be on each Saturday, starting December 16, at the MacKerricher visitor center at 11 am. New docents will learn how to lead the weekly gray whale programs and how to spot the migrating gray whales. New docents will have the option of leading guided whale programs or stationing themselves along the coast to spot migrating whales for the public.
