Ready to Take the Course?

This DBW home study course is approved by California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and meets the California Boater Card education requirement. It can be read here online or downloaded to a home computer. Students who use the online book may order individual answer sheets to complete the course. This national and state approved course allows boaters to study at home at their own pace, and it covers state and federal boating laws, rules of the road, boat handling, required equipment, navigational aids, accident reporting and special topics. The exam consists of 60 questions.

HOW TO TAKE THE CALIFORNIA COURSE FOR SAFE BOATING

1. Reserve some time to read the online eCoursebook.

2. Click here to open the eCoursebook

3. Click here to open the exam booklet and keep it handy as you study the eCoursebook.

4. Request an official answer sheet be mailed to you from pubinfo@parks.ca.gov. Please include your current, complete home or office address. You can also call in your name and shipping address by leaving a voicemail message at 1-888-326-2822.

5. Complete the answer sheet and return it to:

6. Apply for the California Boater Card.

Certificates of completion will be mailed within two to four weeks to students who receive at least 80%. Your passing certificate can be used to get your California Boater Card. You will also receive a notification if you did not pass the course.  You may re-take the course at any time.
